Summer Research Opportunities at Harvard – Internship Program

Live at Harvard for the summer, work alongside Harvard faculty and graduate students, and enjoy access to the outstanding resources of the University. The program covers travel to and from the program, housing, and typically a stipend of $3,500 and a food allowance of $1,500.

Are you considering a PhD? Summer Research Opportunities at Harvard (SROH) will connect you with first-class researchers working in fields in the life and physical sciences, humanities, and social sciences.

During this 10-week undergraduate program, SROH interns conduct research and participate in discussions with Cambridge-based Harvard faculty, build their presentation and research discussions skills, and take part in field trips with other Harvard summer programs. Students in the program live in Harvard housing.

The program is funded by GSAS, Harvard Molecules, Cells, and Organisms, Harvard Evolution, Ecology, and Environment, and the Leadership Alliance.

Who May Enter:

To qualify, you must be a:

  • Be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited public or private college or university in the United States or its territories, as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

  • Demonstrate a committed interest to pursue graduate study toward a PhD or MD-PhD.
  • Have completed at least two semesters and have at least one semester remaining of their undergraduate education by the start of the summer program.

SROH takes place between June and August. Interested students can apply through the Leadership Alliance Summer Research-Early Identification Program.

The SR-EIP application has five sections that must be completed before your application can be submitted. All of these must be completed via this application platform.   • Travel, housing, and stipends may be provided to students on a limited basis. Students receiving stipends must work full time (forty hours per week).

  • Stipends may be provided to students in need whose applications are submitted on time and who are accepted into the program. Per Smithsonian Institution regulations, stipend amounts can typically range from approximately $1,000 to $8,000 for a ten-week session.
  • The amount of the stipend depends on the number of funds available and is at the discretion of the NMAI. Students who live in the Washington, D.C., region may receive a stipend that will offset the costs of commuting, approximately $500–$2,000 for a ten-week session.

National Science Foundation CyberCorps Scholarship for Service

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is requesting student applications for full scholarships to study cybersecurity through its renewed five-year, $5 million National Science Foundation (NSF) CyberCorps Scholarship for Service (SFS) Program and Department of Defense Information Assurance Scholarship Program (IASP).

The SFS Scholarships pay for tuition, reimburse health insurance up to a maximum of $3,000 a year, reimburse books up to $2,000 a year, and pay for professional development travel up to $4,000 a year. In addition, a stipend is paid each academic year in the amount of $22,500 for undergraduates or $34,000 for graduate students.

Scholarships are awarded for two academic years (four semesters) for undergraduates and master’s degree students and for three years (six semesters) for doctoral students. A single student cannot receive more than one SFS scholarship.

Students that are awarded a scholarship under this program incur a service obligation to the government upon graduation from UAH and are required to participate in a paid internship during the summer semester.

  • A cover letter that provides the applicant’s full name, school address, home address, cell phone number, home phone number, student email address, and a statement that the applicant is a citizen or lawful permanent U.S. resident; in addition, the cover letter should describe the applicant’s current academic progress (BS, MS, or Ph.D. student) and date of anticipated graduation
  • A copy of all of the applicant’s transcripts
  • ACT or SAT score for undergraduate applicants
  • Two letters of reference (professional contacts preferred, must not be family members)
  • A letter from the applicant not to exceed two typewritten, single-spaced pages that discusses the applicant’s motivation for applying, interest in cybersecurity, any past relevant experiences, and future plans; please include any current or past military service

CyberCorps®: Scholarship for Service (SFS) benefits:

  • Full tuition and fees
  • Annual stipend: $22,500 for undergraduates, $34,000 for graduate students (master’s and PhD)
  • Reimbursement for books up to $2,000 per year
  • Reimbursement for professional development and travel expenses up to $4,000 per year
  • Reimbursement for health insurance up to $3,000 per year
  • Scholarship Duration: Two academic years (four semesters) for students in bachelor and master level degree programs o Three academic years (six semesters) for students in PhD programs

Department of Defense Information Assurance Scholarship Program benefits:

  • Full tuition and fees
  • Annual stipend: $22,500 for undergraduates; $30,000 for graduate students (master’s and PhD)
  • Reimbursement for books up to $1,250 per year
  • UAH-provided laptop computer ($1,500 value)
  • Reimbursement for travel expenses up to $1,750 per year

All scholarship recipients have a commitment to work after graduation for an approved government position related to cybersecurity for a period equal to the length of the scholarship. In addition, students on scholarship are expected to serve in a government cybersecurity-related paid internship during the summer semester.

CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service recipients are required to participate in an SFS-exclusive job fair in early January in Washington, DC. SFS students may be employed by Federal, State, Local, or Tribal government.

Department of Defense Information Assurance Scholarship Program recipients are paired with a Department of Defense employer at the time of scholarship award and must agree to intern and work for that employer after graduation.

Ayn Rand Institute Essay Contests

Have you read one of Ayn Rand’s thought-provoking novels? Now’s the time! Enter an Ayn Rand Institute essay contest for your chance to win thousands of dollars in cash prizes. ARI has held worldwide essay contests for students on Ayn Rand’s fiction for thirty years.

The contests are open to worldwide for 8th to 12th-grade students, college undergraduate or graduate students. This year they will award over 411 prizes totaling more than $80,250.

Provided By: The Ayn Rand® Institute (ARI) was established in 1985, runs a variety of programs, many of which are aimed at students. It sends free books to schools, sponsors student essay contests and campus clubs, and offers financial assistance to students applying to graduate school.

To be considered eligible for the scholarship, the candidates must follow the given criteria:

  • The contest is open to students worldwide, except where void or prohibited by law.
  • Homeschooled students may enter our essay contests.
  • For Anthem: Entrant must be in the 8th, 9th or 10th grade for any part of the school year in which the contest is held.
  • For The Fountainhead: Entrant must be in the 11th or 12th grade for any part of the school year in which the contest is held.
  • For Atlas Shrugged: Entrant must be a 12th-grader, college undergraduate or graduate student for any part of the school year in which the contest is held.
  • ARI reserves the right to make exceptions to this rule, on a case-by-case basis, for international students or for students with nonstandard school years.

To be entering an essay contest, the candidates must write and submit an essay in one of the following ways.

  • The one entry per student per contest
  • Essays must be written in English only and must be no fewer than 800 and no more than 1,600 words in length, double-spaced. (600 to 1200 word for Anthem)
  • Essays must include a stapled cover sheet with the following information:
  1. Your name and address
  2. Your email address (if available)
  3. The name and address of your school
  4. Topic selected (#1, 2 or 3 from the “topics” tab)
  5. Your current grade level and
  6. (Optional) the name of the teacher who assigned the essay if you are completing it for classroom credit.
