jumpthegap Roca International Design Contest

The new 8th edition of Roca International Design Contest jumpthegap® has started. jumpthegap® is a biennial International Design Contest promoted by Roca with the collaboration of BCD Barcelona Design Center.

The contest is looking for new, innovative and sustainable concepts for the bathroom space of the future, taking into account that the viability of the project should not limit the creativity of the proposals.

jumpthegap® bets for the support of the new generations of designers and architects and offers them an international platform to develop and show their talent.

Who May Eligible:

To eligible, the candidates must be following all the eligibility criteria:

  • The contest is open to young applicants from every country in the world and has two categories:
  1. Professional Category: designers or architects* born from 1 January 1979 onwards.
  2. Student Category: design or architecture students* born from 1 January 1989 onwards.
  • Entries may be individual or from a group of two professionals or two students. Mixed groups are not accepted. Each person or group may participate in one project only.

Important note: When two people submit a group entry, both group members must complete the registration form

They would like to transmit them with the intention to serve as an inspiration to develop your projects:

  • Surprising experiences
  • Homing
  • Automatization
  • Ageing population
  • Sustainability

Projects must be absolutely anonymous: they cannot contain any names or personal details about the author/s, as all this information has been already provided through the registration. All the texts included in the project must be written in English.

The competing project must be submitted in:

  • One pdf file, containing not more than 2 x A3 size pages.
  • The maximum size of the pdf file will be 1.5 MB.
  • The first page must include the title of the project, text with the description of the project, and the main images.

The text must not have more than 600 words, divided into three sections:

  • What? What is the project about? For whom?
  • How? Brief description (How it works, materials…)
  • Why? Why it will be relevant in the future.

The authors of the 20 preselected projects of the Professional and Student categories and the authors of the 4 finalist projects of the Special We Are Water Foundation Prize will be asked to send, within 48 hours of notification:

  • A JPG, PNG or GIF format copy of their degree, certificate or diploma, or a copy of the school’s matriculation document if they are students. In the event of group participation, documents of both members will be sent.
  • A copy of their passport or National Document of Identity.

Award Description:

There are 3 prizes:

  • Two winning projects will be chosen and will receive a prize of €10,000 each, one in the professional category and one in the student category.
  • One Special We Are Water Foundation Prize will be chosen and will receive €6,000. This mention will be given by the We Are Water Foundation, which has two key goals.

Benefits for winners and finalists

  • A PR campaign to promote the winning and finalist projects and their authors.
  • Attendance to the Awards Ceremony on October 10 (2019) at the Disseny Hub Barcelona (Spain). Roca will cover travel and accommodation expenses for the winners and accommodation for the finalists.
  • Special agenda during their stay in Barcelona: participation in some specific visits and meetings. A chance to present their portfolios to jury members and local experts.
  • A jumpthegap® official diploma. Winners will also receive a trophy and a digital label to be used on communication channels.
  • Participation in a jumpthegap®(talk), if possible, in their respective countries.
  • If required, the author/s of the winning project will cooperate with Roca’s Design Department on the manufacture of a possible full-size mock-up or specific material to be used in presenting the project.

Application Deadline:

  • The registration period will be open from October 10th until March 27th, during which young architects and designers can show their talent by submitting innovative and sustainable concepts for the bathroom space of the future.
  • The projects must be submitted to the contest website by 12:00 hours (GMT+2) on 25 April 2019.
