UK Department for International Development (DFID) is pleased to offer Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships for Low and Middle-Income Countries.

These PhD fellowships are available for international candidates from low and middle-income Commonwealth countries, to spend up to 12 months at a UK university as part of their doctoral studies in their home country.

Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships, funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Provided By: The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC) provides the main UK government scholarship scheme led by international development objectives. The CSC is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for International Development (DFID).

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • Citizens of developing Commonwealth countries (Antigua and Barbuda, Bangladesh, Belize, Botswana, Cameroon, Dominica, Eswatini, Fiji, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Montserrat, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, St Helena, St Lucia, St Vincent, and the Grenadines, Samoa, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, The Gambia, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Zambia) can apply for these fellowships.
  • Applicants who are citizens of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
  • 12 months of study at a UK university as part of an applicant’s doctoral studies in their home country, starting in October 2020
  • Applicants who are registered (or will be registered by September 2020) for a PhD at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country
  • Study at a UK university with which your home university has an established institutional or departmental link.
  • Study at a UK university which has a part funding agreement with the CSC

These scholarships are offered under six themes:

Application Procedure:

To participate, you must make your application directly to the CSC using CSC’s online application system.  One application per applicant for these financial aid positions will be accepted.

Required Documents: Your application must include the following supporting documentation:

  • Proof of citizenship or refugee status: a copy of your valid passport (or national ID card) showing your photograph, date of birth, and country of citizenship or refugee status– uploaded to the online application system
  • Full transcripts detailing all your higher education qualifications (with certified translations if not in English) – uploaded to the online application system
  • Supporting statement from your supervisor at your home country university, highlighting current institutional links submitted directly by your supervisor to the online application system (supervisors will be sent an email request).
  • Supporting statements from your proposed supervisor at a UK university, highlighting current institutional links submitted directly by your supervisor to the online application system (supervisors will be sent an email request).
  • Reference from at least one other individual – submitted directly by the referee to the online application system (referees will be sent an email request)

Government of India Fully-Funded PhD Fellowships for ASEAN Students at IITs

Aspirants from ASEAN countries are welcome to apply for a fellowship to pursue a higher program at an IIT of their choice in India and get a chance to finish their PhD with funding that will cover the entire cost of study and living expenses for up to 5 years.

The Government of India Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) is offering 1000 Fully-Funded PhD Fellowships at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the warm and friendly ties between India and ASEAN.

Application Procedure:

To participate, participants must follow the given guidelines:

  • Applicants apply online on the portal. To apply, applicants are required to take admission in one of an IITs in India. Explore IITs and apply for a fully-funded PhD program.
  • ASEAN students applying for the fellowships will require a student visa with an admission letter from IIT and last education certificate.
  • Visa Application is to be filled online at gov.in/visa/.
  • Applicants may be asked to provide additional documents, if needed, by the consular officer – Passport, photographs, and Signatures. Applicants must check the full detail for a student visa.

Award Description:

The Government of India will provide a total budget outlay of INR 300 crore in up to 1000 integrated PhD Fellowships (approximately USD 45 million). The benefits are as the following:

  • The maximum tenure of each fellowship is 5 years. Winners will receive a stipend per month as the following: INR 31,000/- for the first 2 years and INR 35,000/- for the next three years
  • Fellows will receive a research grant up to INR 170,000/- for research expenses such as travel, books, and contingency.
  • The program will also provide accommodation (monthly house rent allowance) up to 24% – as per Govt. norms (depending on the city) – of the stipend, if hostel accommodation not provided.

Opportunities for PhD funding via this scheme are extremely competitive, with higher than usual eligibility requirements. Applicants should be confident that they are able to demonstrate outstanding academic performance before applying for this scholarship scheme.

Applications are accepted from talented candidates from Imperial College London, the UK and worldwide. There are no restrictions on nationality. 

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • Candidates must be among the highest achievers in their undergraduate cohort, and in receipt of, or due to receive a first class UK degree or equivalent.
  • Candidates with a standalone Master’s qualification must have achieved a distinction or, where this has yet to have been achieved, be able to provide evidence of high performance that will lead to a distinction.
  • They must also hold a first class UK undergraduate degree or equivalent (integrated Masters that form part of an undergraduate degree, e.g. MEng, MSci, M.Math, are assessed by Admissions as an undergraduate qualification when determining eligibility).
  • Candidates with multiple standalone Master’s qualifications must have achieved a distinction in the one most relevant to their PhD study.
  • Candidates with degrees from overseas institutions are strongly urged to determine if their scores/grades are equivalent to the relevant eligibility criteria.
  • Prior to applying candidates must have made contact with a supervisor in an academic department at Imperial College London who has agreed to supervise their research project. Please note that supervisors are limited to supervise one scholar at any time.
  • Please note: current registered Imperial PhD students are not eligible to be considered for a President’s PhD Scholarship.

Required Documents:

  • When prompted for a personal statement you must ensure that it consists of approx. 1000 words (maximum 2 pages) and outlines your academic and research achievements to date, explaining in brief your planned research project. The selection panel will not consider statements exceeding the 2-page limit. You may submit updated versions of this statement if required following application submission.
  • To be considered for the President’s PhD Scholarship scheme, applicants must select this option in the funding section of the additional questions tab within the online application form.
  • You must also meet any additional application requirements stated by your department of choice.

Successful candidates will receive the following financial support for up to 3.5 years:

  • Full funding for tuition fees
  • A stipend of £21,200 per annum to assist with living costs
  • A consumables fund of £2,000 per annum for the first 3 years of study
  • programme of bespoke opportunities and events delivered by the Graduate School
